It is my utmost pleasure to welcome you to this wondrous moment of celebration. I thank you for making it a part of your day to be here as we commemorate this milestone. I stand here, before you looking back at the journey that has been.

My classmates and I started off at Arnold Plaza in Westlands and I remember being timid to even say hello, I know it seems unbelievable to some of you but indeed it took a while to say hello to a classmate who later became a friend. We had no idea what we were getting into but Joel found it wonderful to grace us with bottles of soda in week 1 only because our dear Ivy had a notebook. We collected ourselves throughout the semester but straight lines tested the ability of some of us to hold rulers. The most interesting part at the beginning of this journey was explaining to my guardians what Universal Design was and still is, as they were clearly just properly informed of staircases and elevators.

We started forming friendships, thankfully some are still standing to this day, and we realized we could quite a lot being here. Yes businesses in the school were at all-time high. We were once chased out of building’s basement area at Arnold Plaza because we were busy being too melodious for them as a music club (insert a light note Hallelujah). A trip was taken to Mombasa and the explorers in us were shining brighter than the moon at night. We enjoyed in the tides of the oceans that we almost forgot the spelling of the orthographics or the running of the software that we engaged with a month prior.

We entered a new year and for some of us as the word goes, ‘kilituramba’. We struggled to adjust to new territories of administration and location. I remember we could not lamenting why we had to walk to the new location and we were ‘seniors’. But not to worry, certain instructors and I are laughing about it to date. For the next semesters, we geared up for sleepless nights as we had a side discussion with our lecturers and some of our guardians that we will not be sleeping, well until work was done. 2am late nights became a beautiful reality.

At some point in the semester, the craft department was under siege because of model work but on the bright side it taught us how to locate discounts looking for scale 1:100 trees and cars. Our instructors probably had to charge their communication gadgets more often that usual because as a class maswali tulikuwa nazo. The number of times we needed to confirm the knowledge we had or find support is a matter that needs to be accepted a thesis topic. For that we thank you for being there and supporting us in the ways you were able to.

All these trained us for the workspaces that we got to engage in during our internship periods with trainers who were delighted to have us. On a personal note, it is a joy to see people believe in my ability to spot color that they ask me what their cloth colors are and we are in the center of Nairobi. It is indeed an honor to utilize the internet facilities in some cases but just to clarify, the color wheel and I still have a strong molecular bond.

KENCID as an institution and a fraternity has given me room to grow and develop beyond what I could have imagined. It has networked us, disciplined us, developed our character, nurtured our abilities and improving on our weaknesses in great measure. We could not have imagined it any other way. We have molded into designers who yearn for timelessness, who think of how to solve, innovate and create solutions to better the society and environment we live in. We have been prepared in great capacity to serve the communities that we live in and prepare for the generations that will come after us even as we continue to learn.

Our parents and guardians, we honor today. For firstly allowing us to take on this design journey and allowing us to think beyond and outside the boxes. For the funds you have utilized to just allow us to study, we thank you. To the sacrifices you have made on our behalves, we thank you. For the doors that you made a way for them to open, we thank you. The prayers you have made over us to see us come this far, you are seeing what the Lord has done. I’m here to let you know that all you have done has not been in vain and the fruits of what you sowed and being harvested today. We thank you for all that you are and do for us.

I extended all my might and strength in honoring our Lord God who has carried us through. He has been sovereign over our studies and the processes we have been through. He has continuously answered the prayers we have made with the hope and desire we have had to reach here even with just simply granting us the blessing of life. I endlessly pour out my gratitude to Him.

Being at KENCID has been a journey.

Here is to creating timeless designs.

Here is to creating legacies.

Here is to changing and improving the parts of the earth that we get to lay our feet and hands on.

May the good Lord bless you and may the good Lord bless KENCID.

Thank you.
