The Foundation Certificate in Interior Design is a program designed to introduce students to the fundamentals of interior design. 

QUALIFICATION: Mean grade of D- (minus) in KCSE Or equivalent.

DURATION: 2 Semesters

COURSE INFORMATION

Introduction to Interior Design: The course will start with an introduction to the field of interior design, exploring its history, evolution, and various specializations within the industry.

Design Elements and Principles: Students will learn about the essential elements of design, such as color, texture, space, form, and lighting, and how to apply these elements effectively in interior spaces. They will also study the principles of design, including balance, proportion, rhythm, harmony, and unity.

Space Planning and Layout: This module focuses on understanding spatial relationships and developing skills in space planning. Students will learn how to analyze and optimize interior spaces, considering factors like functionality, circulation, and ergonomics.

Materials and Finishes: Exploring different materials, finishes, and surfaces commonly used in interior design is a crucial aspect of the course. Students will learn about the characteristics, applications, and aesthetics of various materials to make informed decisions in their design projects.

Drawing and Drafting: Students will acquire fundamental drawing and drafting skills necessary for communicating design ideas. This may include manual drafting techniques as well as digital tools like computer-aided design (CAD) software.

Color Theory and Application: Understanding the principles of color theory, psychology, and its application in interior design is essential. Students will learn about color schemes, mood creation, and the impact of color on spatial perception.

Furniture and Accessories: This module focuses on furniture styles, selection, and arrangement, as well as the integration of accessories and decorative elements within interior spaces.

Presentation Techniques: Students will learn how to visually present their design concepts using techniques such as sketching, rendering, and creating mood boards. Effective presentation skills are vital for conveying ideas to clients or stakeholders.

Professional Practice: This component covers the business and professional aspects of interior design. Students will gain knowledge of project management, client communication, budgeting, and ethical considerations within the industry.

Interior Design Career Options

Completing a Foundation Certificate in Interior Design can open up various career options within the field. Here are some potential career paths you can consider:

Interior Designer: This is the most obvious career choice, where you can work as a professional interior designer. As an interior designer, you will create functional and aesthetically pleasing interior spaces for residential, commercial, or public environments. You will work closely with clients, understand their needs and preferences, develop design concepts, create drawings and specifications, select materials and finishes, and oversee the implementation of the design.

Interior Decorator: As an interior decorator, you will focus more on the decorative aspects of interior design. You will work with clients to select and arrange furniture, accessories, colors, and textures to create visually appealing spaces. While interior decorators often work on residential projects, they may also be involved in styling commercial spaces, such as hotels, restaurants, or retail stores.

Set Designer: Set designers are responsible for creating the visual environment of film, television, theater, or event productions. With your knowledge of spatial design and aesthetics, you can work with directors, producers, and production teams to design and construct sets that enhance the storytelling and create the desired atmosphere for the production.

Visual Merchandiser: Visual merchandisers are employed by retail stores or brands to create attractive product displays and store layouts. They use their design skills to showcase products effectively, create visually appealing window displays, and enhance the overall shopping experience for customers.

Exhibition Designer: Exhibition designers create engaging and immersive spaces for museums, galleries, trade shows, and other exhibitions. They utilize their understanding of spatial design, lighting, and storytelling to design exhibits that educate, entertain, and captivate visitors.

Furniture Designer: With a focus on furniture design, you can work in collaboration with manufacturers or as an independent designer. You will create innovative and functional furniture pieces, considering factors like ergonomics, aesthetics, and materials.
