How to plan a mosaic pattern by scale and visual rhythm

Illustrative scene of learners exploring Stone Arts, Mosaics & Architectural Ornament in a bright studio

Start with the visual idea before selecting individual pieces. Sketch the main movement, contrast and rhythm of the pattern, then compare how those shapes read at different scales. A composition viewed across a room needs a different balance from a small panel examined close up. Use a simple colour study to test emphasis and negative space.

Test the composition at more than one viewing distance and ask another viewer what they notice first. Record the intended scale and the parts of the pattern that should remain legible. Here, focus on visual composition; use a separate sample-board brief to record material sources and care. Your sample does not prove that a floor or wall assembly is safe or suitable for installation.

Kitengela Glass offers a local mosaic-making experience, giving you an example of this creative medium. Explore KENCID’s Interior Design course to think about how decorative work relates to a space, then apply that spatial awareness in Stone Arts, Mosaics & Architectural Ornament.
