Researching a cultural motif before using it in a design

Before using a cultural motif, research where it comes from, what it means and who has the right context to explain it. Consult relevant knowledge holders or community representatives identified through that research. Ask permission before reproducing, adapting or commercialising the motif, and agree how contributors will be credited and how value may be shared.

Keep a record of the consultation, the sources you used, the agreed scope and any limits on future display or sale. Do not assume that a motif shown online is free to reuse. If a project involves traditional knowledge or cultural expressions, consult a qualified specialist about the applicable Kenyan framework before proceeding.

Check the Protection of Traditional Knowledge and Cultural Expressions Act and National Museums of Kenya regulations with a qualified specialist; this article does not interpret the law. Use these principles in your Stone Arts projects whenever you research cultural material or community knowledge.
