Architectural ornament in an interior: questions for a design brief
Architectural ornament is most useful when it responds to the space around it. Ask what the detail should do: guide attention, mark a transition, add texture or connect a new interior with an existing context. Consider the people using the room, viewing distance, scale, light and how the surface will be cleaned or repaired.
A decorative detail should suit the room, user, viewing distance and care needs. If the work touches a historic building or protected site, ask the project owner and relevant specialists what review and approvals are needed; a decorative study is not conservation work.
