Caring for a decorative stone or mosaic surface

Illustrative scene of learners exploring Stone Arts, Mosaics & Architectural Ornament in a bright studio

There is no single cleaning method for every stone or mosaic surface. The right approach depends on the material, finish, grout, adhesive, installation, age and the product manufacturer's instructions. Check the specification or ask the installer before using a cleaner, sealant or abrasive tool.

For a design project, include maintenance as part of the brief. Record who is responsible for routine care, which products are approved and where repair information is kept. Historic or damaged surfaces may need a conservation specialist; do not treat an online cleaning tip as a conservation method.

Use supplier and installer guidance for your specific material and installed surface; this article does not provide conservation or cleaning instructions. Explore KENCID’s Interior Design course for material choices in spaces, and apply that thinking in your Stone Arts studies.
