Bamboo in Kenyan interiors: design questions before specifying it
You can assess bamboo for furniture, accessories and some interior components, but the right choice depends on the product and setting. Ask where people will use the item, how often they will touch or clean it, whether it may get wet and how you can repair it.
For a Nairobi home, hotel, shop or office, document the user need and the exact product specification before presenting bamboo as a solution. Ask the supplier about source, dimensions, treatment and finish. Confirm installation details with the relevant specialist, especially where a component interacts with a building system or has a safety function.
A material board can help compare bamboo with other options, but it should record more than colour and texture. Include maintenance, availability, construction method, replacement parts and the evidence behind any performance or environmental claim. Avoid broad statements such as “eco-friendly” unless the claim is supported for the actual product and its full use context.
See KENCID's current Interior Design course for the wider study of materials and interior spaces. The National Bamboo Development Strategy provides national context, not a specification for an interior product.
