KENCID course guide

Glass Arts & Craft

Explore glass through craft, visual composition and carefully documented product or artwork development.

Course Overview

In this course, you combine visual thinking with glass materials and practical making. Explore stained glass, cold-work techniques, decorative processes, sample development, assembly and finishing. You move from a design brief to small studies, mock-ups and a resolved piece, documenting your decisions at every stage.

Plan each project around the materials and methods available in your supervised studio. Follow instructor guidance and workshop procedures whenever you use tools, equipment or glass treatments. When a practical requires specialist processes or hot glass, work only with the authorised equipment, training and supervision for that process.

Artistic glass craft differs from designing or certifying structural glazing. Your decorative sample does not establish a panel’s building performance, fire rating or suitability for a specific installation. Consult the qualified professionals responsible for building, electrical and safety decisions on those projects.

Why Study Glass Arts & Craft

Choose this course if you are drawn to colour, transparency, pattern, texture and three-dimensional form. Practise a disciplined process: plan, sample, review, refine and document. Build a portfolio that explains the visual outcome and the practical choices behind it.

What You Will Explore

  • Visual research Study colour, light, pattern and the needs of a user or site.
  • Design development Move from drawings and maquettes to material samples and a resolved idea.
  • Studio process Use the tools, handling controls and supervised workflow relevant to each method.
  • Presentation Photograph your work, describe techniques accurately and record limits or next tests.

Career Options in Glass Arts & Craft

Connect visual design to material process and presentation. Seek supervised experience and understand the boundaries between decorative work and structural applications. This course develops artistic glass skills; it does not qualify you to design, install or certify structural glazing.
