What to ask about safety in a glass-art workshop

Illustrative scene of learners exploring Glass Arts & Craft in a bright studio

Before you join a glass-art workshop, ask what process the instructor will demonstrate and what you will do. Confirm that the organiser provides an induction, suitable personal protective equipment, clear supervision, a controlled workspace and handling and cleanup instructions. Ask whether beginners can join and what to do if a piece breaks.

Do not improvise cutting, heating, grinding or chemical processes from online instructions. Different methods have different hazards and require the correct equipment, controls and training. If the organiser cannot explain the supervision and safety arrangements, choose a different activity.

Use this checklist alongside a risk assessment and the venue's approved safety procedures. NITA's Nairobi centre gives you an example of technical training in Kenya. In KENCID's Glass Arts & Craft course, ask the course team which practicals your studies include.
