From a product idea to a tested prototype

Illustrative scene of learners exploring Materials Innovation & Product Development in a bright studio

A useful prototype begins with a user need and a clear question. Write down the function, size, environment and constraints. Sketch possible solutions, choose a material that can be worked safely in the available setting, then make a model that tests one or two important decisions.

Ask users to respond to your prototype and record what they do, not only what they say. Note changes, failed assumptions and next steps. If you build the model from temporary material, label it clearly: it does not prove that the final product is safe, durable or ready for manufacture. Match each test to the intended use and involve the right expertise.

The University of Nairobi describes Product/Industrial Design as moving a product from concept toward the marketplace. Explore KENCID’s Product Design course for that broader study area, then use Materials Innovation & Product Development to strengthen your material research and prototype evidence.
