Metal art course or welding course: how to compare the focus

Illustrative scene of learners exploring Metal Arts & Sculptural Fabrication in a bright studio

Metal art and welding may share materials or equipment, but they have different purposes. An arts pathway may focus on form, composition, scale, surface and communicating a creative idea. Occupational welding and fabrication training may focus on processes and workplace competencies for particular tasks. Compare the actual curriculum and assessment, not just the word “metal” in a title.

Ask about equipment, induction, supervision, personal protective equipment, awarding arrangements and the work you will complete. Confirm the provider’s current entry requirements, duration, fees and intake. Never assume an arts course qualifies you for structural welding or engineering sign-off.

NITA’s Nairobi centre publishes technical-training information for welding and fabrication. KENCID offers distinct Sculpture, Fabrication and Metal Arts & Sculptural Fabrication courses. Compare their learning areas with the work you want to do.
