Course Overview
In this course, you connect drawing, form development, material study and practical construction. Explore artistic forming, forging, joining and controlled finishes. Move from reference research and a design brief to sketches, scale models, supervised fabrication and presentation. Document each stage, including revisions and the reasons behind your choices.
Consider how scale, mass, balance, joining and finish shape your artwork or object. Think about where people will see it, how they will handle it and what maintenance it may need. Follow workshop risk controls, equipment authorisation and instructor supervision. Use the required training and precautions for processes involving heat, sharp edges or powered tools.
Artistic metalwork is different from structural welding and engineering. Your sculpture prototype does not establish a component’s load capacity or suitability for building use. Work with qualified professionals on structural, electrical, public-installation and other safety-critical decisions.
Why Study Metal Arts & Sculptural Fabrication
Choose this course if you like building, shaping and revising forms. Bring design communication together with technical planning, workshop discipline and a portfolio of resolved work. Learn to explain what you made, what evidence supports it and what requires further review.
What You Will Explore
- Form and scale Develop a brief into drawings, models and a considered material plan.
- Fabrication planning Sequence processes, keep records and practise supervised workshop methods.
- Finish and review Assess appearance, assembly, presentation and maintenance needs.
- Safe practice Follow authorised procedures and recognise when you need specialist review.
Career Options in Metal Arts & Sculptural Fabrication
Combine creative judgement with planned making. Show research, models, fabrication decisions and your workshop experience in your portfolio. Describe your skills accurately and do not claim qualifications for safety-critical structural work that you have not earned.
