What to ask before metalwork in a student workshop

Illustrative scene of learners exploring Metal Arts & Sculptural Fabrication in a bright studio

Before practical metalwork, ask what equipment and processes the session covers, what induction is required and who supervises each activity. Confirm the approved protective equipment, ventilation, tool authorisation, first-aid arrangements and cleanup procedure. Find out whether beginners may observe first and how the workshop handles a damaged tool or unexpected incident.

Never start cutting, grinding, heating or welding because you saw a demonstration online. Each process needs its own controls, equipment and authorised supervision. If a safety question is unclear, stop and ask the instructor before work begins.

Use this checklist as a starting point, not as a workshop risk assessment. NITA Nairobi publishes current technical-training information; KENCID’s Fabrication and Sculpture courses have different study scopes. Metal Arts & Sculptural Fabrication develops artistic metalwork; follow your instructor’s authorisation for each workshop process.
