Planning public sculpture with fabricators and site teams

Illustrative scene of learners exploring Metal Arts & Sculptural Fabrication in a bright studio

A public sculpture proposal needs more than a compelling form. Start with the audience, site, access, surroundings and reason for the work. Find out who owns or manages the site and what permissions or consultations are required before detailed design proceeds. Consider how people will approach the piece, how it will be maintained and what information should accompany it.

Bring fabricators and relevant technical specialists into the conversation early. A model or rendering helps people understand an idea but does not prove that a full-size structure can be built or installed safely. Technical design, foundations, transport, installation and public safety require qualified people and project-specific approvals.
