Choosing textile and soft-furnishing materials for a product concept

Choose a textile by starting with the object and its setting. Curtains, a removable cushion cover, a wearable accessory and a frequently cleaned public-space furnishing have different requirements. Compare hand, weight, drape, weave or knit, seam behaviour, colour, cleaning instructions and expected contact.

Keep swatch notes consistent: supplier or source where known, fibre description, date, finish, dimensions and any test or care information. If you carry out a classroom observation, state the method and limit. Do not infer fire performance, durability or safety from appearance or feel alone. Those claims need appropriate evidence for the product's use.

NITA’s Textile Training Institute lists textile learning such as weaving and design. For spatial applications, compare your material work with KENCID’s Interior Design course and Product Design course. In Materials Innovation & Product Development, connect those interests through material inquiry and prototyping.
