Glass mosaic design: pattern, colour and scale

Illustrative scene of learners exploring Glass Arts & Craft in a bright studio

A mosaic pattern changes as the viewer moves closer or farther away. Before selecting colours, decide where the work will be seen, how large it will be and what feeling or information it should communicate. A grid of small pieces can read differently from the same colours arranged in broad shapes.

Make a sample board and view it at the distance expected in the final setting. Record piece size, spacing, colour relationships, edge treatment and the likely cleaning needs. A tabletop sample can help test composition; it does not confirm that a wall, floor or exterior installation is safe or suitable. Installation decisions require the right substrate, specification and professional review.

Kitengela Glass shares a mosaic-making experience in Kenya, which gives you local context for the craft. Explore KENCID’s Interior Design course for wider spatial-design study, and Glass Arts & Craft for material exploration and decorative composition.
