KENCID course guide

Mould Making, Model Making & Composite Fabrication

Learn how models, moulds and material processes help you develop a sculptural or product idea.

Course Overview

In this course, you work through the steps between an idea and a repeatable form. Develop drawings and scale models, prepare patterns, plan moulds, select materials and practise supervised casting or composite work, finishing and inspection. Apply the process to sculpture, display, craft and product-development briefs.

Start by defining the shape, quantity and intended use. Use a model to test form and proportion, plan how a mould will release, and make samples to examine surface and finishing choices. Keep records of materials, methods, conditions and observations so you can evaluate each result.

Mould and composite processes can involve dust, chemicals, heat and other hazards. Follow approved workshop procedures, product safety information, ventilation controls and competent supervision. A classroom sample does not prove building compliance, fire performance or suitability for a regulated product.

Why Study Mould Making, Model Making & Composite Fabrication

Choose this course if you enjoy solving three-dimensional problems and repeating a form carefully. Combine visual judgement with planning, record keeping and process review. Show how your model changed, why you selected a mould or production route and what you would test next.

What You Will Explore

  • Model and pattern development Interpret a brief and communicate form at an appropriate scale.
  • Mould planning Explore parting, release, surface and repeatability as design questions.
  • Supervised fabrication Handle materials only within authorised and documented workshop procedures.
  • Quality and communication Inspect samples, record process limits and present your finished work.

Career Options in Mould Making, Model Making & Composite Fabrication

Connect model making with fabrication and production. Build a portfolio of process records and show that you understand the authorisations required in a professional workshop. Your course work does not permit you to perform hazardous processes independently.
